About Fly or Drive to Oakland from Orange County

Fly or Drive to Oakland from Orange County?
I have to attend training in Oakland for five days. Wondering if I should take my car up there so I'll be able to take in the city sights and have something to do after my training sessions. How is the drive from Orange County to Oakland? Is it safe and easy? I'm a female and will most likely have to travel alone up to Oakland. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks! Oh, and I hate flying!!!! It makes me so nervous and I dread the thought of it.

Answer 1 :
It's a long, boring drive. I suggest you fly and then rent a car when you want to see the sights; or you could try City Car Share: http://www.citycarshare.org/
Answer 2 :
If you drive, it's probably a six hour drive, mostly on I-5. That freeway is heavily patrolled, which can be good for single women, but bad for speeding. And after the sessions you are much better off in San Francisco than Oakland. You might want to consider coming back on 101. 2-3 hours longer, but a much more enjoyable drive. Especially around Pismo Beach, and in the Santa Barbara-Ventura stretch.
Answer 3 :
Well if you hate driving, then fly... Flights should be cheap now that its not the travel season.
Answer 4 :
You have two choices, the I-5 or the 101. I-5 is the faster route taking around 6 hours as well as being safer due to more patrol, but the drive is boring. You're seeing nothing but farmland, hills, truck stops and basically monotonous scenery for most of the drive there. Taking the 101 will take you an extra hour or two depending on the traffic and how many stops you decide to take. There are several nice towns and cities along the Central Coast you will pass along the way including Santa Barbara, Solvang, San Luis Obispo and a few beaches. You'll have lots to do along the way that you might want to consider spending the day at one or several of these places. So in the end it's your choice between a shorter drive vs a more interesting one.
Answer 5 :
I would fly. The drive is long and boring. There isn't much to see in Oakland, so you will probably want to go to San Francisco, in which case you can take the BART to the city and then use the local subway and buses to get around. Parking in San Francisco is a pain, and even if you had a car I'd suggest you leave it outside and use transit.
